Daily readings Saturday, Gospel for November 28 (Jesus´ call to be ever vigilant.): At that time, Jesus said to his disciples: "Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.". Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.
"Pope Francis: Watching what´s going on in your heart."
In the daily Readings, we see that one of the attitudes of the Christian who wants to remain in the Lord: to know what is going on in one´s heart. It is necessary to know how to discern the spirits, to discern if something makes us remain in the Lord or if it distances us from Him.
Our heart always has desires, desires, thoughts, but are these desires of the Lord or do they distance us from the Lord? Behold then, that the Apostle John exhorts us to put to the test what we think and desire. If this goes in the line of the Lord, you will do well; if not, it does not.
Test the spirits to see if they are truly from God because many false prophets have come into the world. Prophets or prophecies or proposals: "I want to do this! But this does not bring you to the Lord, it takes you away from Him. This is why vigilance is necessary. The Christian is a man or woman who knows how to watch over his or her heart. And so often our heart, with so many things that come and go, seems like a neighborhood market: you find everything there and you don´t! We must try, this is from the Lord and this is not, to remain in the Lord
What is the criterion for understanding whether a thing comes from Christ or from the antichrist? St. John has a clear, simple idea: "Every spirit that recognizes Jesus Christ, who came in the flesh, is from God. Every spirit that does not recognize Jesus is not of God: it is the spirit of the antichrist". But what does it mean, therefore, to recognize that the Word has come in the flesh? It means: "to recognize the way of Jesus Christ, to recognize that He, being God, has lowered Himself, has humbled Himself to death on a cross".
That is the way of Jesus Christ: abasement, humility, humiliation too. If a thought, if a desire leads you on that path of humility, of abasement, of service to others, it is of Jesus. But if it leads you down the path of sufficiency, of vanity, of pride, down the path of an abstract thought, it does not belong to Jesus.
So many times, our heart is a road, all of them pass through it. And I always choose the things that come from God. Do I know which are those that come from God? Do I know the true criterion for discerning my thoughts, my desires?
Let´s think about this and not forget that the criterion is the Incarnation of the Word. The Word has come in the flesh: This is Jesus Christ!. (Daily Readings reflection, Saint Martha, January 7, 2014.).
Daily Prayer Saturday, for Gospel.
Lord, You call me to be always attentive and watch over the salvation of my soul. The evil enemy is like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. I ask you to give me wisdom to make the best decisions in my life. I want to reach happiness and only from your hand it is possible. Watch over my thoughts, lest I am lost behind the barren desire to attain earthly titles by forgetting you. Watch over my heart, lest it be bound to earthly desires and forget your holy name. I count on your blessing. Amen. (Healing with the serenity prayer for daily readings and Holy Gospel)
