Who is St. Charbel Makhlouf?

Saint Charbel, whose birth name was Youssef Antoun Makhlouf, was born on May 8, 1828, into a deeply pious and modest Maronite Catholic family in Bekaa Kafra, a beautiful village in northern Lebanon. He was one of five children in this family, and they lived in the highest mountain village of Lebanon, Bekaa Kafra, closer to the heavens than to the earth. His earthly father passed away when he was only three years old, leaving a void that God would soon fill with divine grace. Charbel had two uncles who were dedicated hermits, and as a devoted child, he took the family's small flock of sheep to a nearby Marian grotto, turning the pastures into a sanctuary where he spent most of the day in profound prayer.

Growing up, entirely inspired by God's consuming love, he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order of monks in 1851 and was joyfully ordained a priest in 1859. Later, hearing the radical call of the Holy Spirit, he retired to the isolated hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul to spend 23 rigorous years in unceasing prayer, strict fasting, manual work, and extreme penance. He lived this hidden life until, on Christmas Eve of 1898, his purified soul departed to eternally meet the Beloved in the Kingdom of Heaven. His body remained miraculously uncorrupted after his death, radiating a mystical light from his tomb for months. Since then, many miraculous graces and medical cures have been achieved through his powerful intercession. Recognizing his extraordinary holiness, he was canonized by His Holiness Pope Paul VI in 1977.
