Who was Dominic Savio?

Saint Dominic Savio was born on April 2, 1842, in San Giovanni di Riva, near Chieri (Turin). He was an exceptional child; from a very early age, he already showed clear signs of a profound love and holy fear of God. On the occasion of his First Holy Communion, at the young age of seven, he had already established the definitive blueprint for his life: "I will go to confession and communion as often as my confessor allows." At twelve years old, Saint John Bosco accepted him into the Oratory in Turin, and from that exact moment, Dominic Savio begged for his guidance in order to reach sanctity. "Death rather than sin" was one of his most frequently repeated mottos, which he fulfilled with absolute surrender.

Serene and happy, Saint Dominic Savio strived in the exact fulfillment of his duties as a student and in helping his companions in every way possible, teaching them the Catechism, assisting the sick, and resolving disputes with a mature charity that structural parameters alone cannot explain.

No one knew of this supposed illness, but due to Dominic's mistic insistence, Don Bosco let him go. His mother was not actually sick in a conventional way; she was fighting for her life in the middle of an extremely difficult labor, and her life was in grave danger of death. Dominic entered the room, embraced her, kissed her, and placed a scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary around her neck. He then returned to the Oratory, thanked Don Bosco for the permission, and told him that his mother was fine. The mother had given birth to her baby without any further complications.

Everyone witnessed the undeniable miracle, and she herself lent the holy scapular to other women who experienced severe difficulties with their pregnancies. Countless graces were granted through that miraculous scapular, establishing a tradition of heavenly care for mothers.
