In this way you can receive the plenary indulgence from Pope Francis when he imparts the extraordinary blessing Urbi et Orbi

The plenary indulgence to be imparted by Pope Francis will be offered this March 27 from St. Peter´s Square, with which the Holy Father wishes to offer us "spiritual strength in the midst of this worldwide epidemic that affects us all. Here is how you can receive this indulgence according to the requirements of the Catholic Church

How will this indulgence be given?

Pope Francis has indicated that this indulgence may be received through the extraordinary blessing "Urbi et Orbi", a blessing that is only given on Christmas and Easter day, but because of this Coronavirus pandemic, Pope Francis saw the need for all of us to be able to receive it at this time and receive the gift of the blessing with a plenary indulgence.

What is the Urbi et Orbi blessing?

According to the Catholic encyclopedia, The term Urbi et Orbi (meaning "for the city and for the world") means that a document or a papal blessing is addressed not only to the city of Rome, but to the entire Catholic world.

The Urbi et Orbi blessing can only be given by the Supreme Pontiffs on the dates: December 25 (Christmas), the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and Easter Sunday, when the resurrection of the Lord occurs.

The words of Pope Francis about the Urbi et Orbi blessing came after the recitation of the Angelus prayer on March 22nd, in which he announced that "we will listen to the word of God, we will raise our prayer and we will adore the Blessed Sacrament", "At the end, I will give the ´Urbi et Orbi´ blessing, to which will be connected the possibility of receiving a plenary indulgence".

What is a plenary indulgence?

The Catholic Church has an incredible treasure of graces at her disposal. Our belonging to the Communion of Saints gives us the right to have recourse to this treasure of grace. This is what the Church calls "Indulgences".

An indulgence can be partial or plenary. A Partial Indulgence does not remit all the punishment of sin, while a Plenary Indulgence remits ALL the temporal punishment of sin. This means that if you died in the state of grace, having obtained the plenary indulgence, and you had not sinned since you obtained the indulgence, you would go directly to Heaven.

A plenary indulgence is an extra-sacramental remission that can only be obtained once a day. Indulgences can also be applied to the individual himself, or to the souls of the deceased, to help them enter heaven, but they cannot be applied to another living person.

The common requirements for obtaining a plenary indulgence, is a normal ordinary time:

  • To intend to obtain the indulgence.
  • To receive the Sacrament of Penance.
  • To receive the Eucharist.
  • To pray for the Pope´s intentions.
  • Performing the prescribed action of Indulgence (e.g., making a pilgrimage to a Shrine, visiting the seasonal churches of Rome, visiting a church, etc.)
  • To be free from all attachment to sin.

Are the same requirements for Indulgence for this time of epidemic?

In this extraordinary case, the Church has been a little flexible on this issue, knowing the moment we are living and the limitations we are having on our movement.

According to the decree issued by the Vatican Apostolic Penitentiary, the faithful may receive the plenary indulgence in this way.

1. Requirements for all.

  • Recite the Creed
  • An Our Father
  • A prayer to the Virgin Mary

Intentions.

The main prayer intention will be to ask God for the end of the Coronavirus epidemic, the relief of the sick and eternal salvation for those who have died as a result of this pandemic.

Confession.

To receive the plenary indulgence, one must renounce all affection for sin. To have true repentance from the heart, a firm desire for conversion and to confess sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation when possible and to be able to return to your parish if services have been interrupted because of the coronavirus.

2. Persons affected by coronavirus.

  • Faithful directly affected by the coronavirus
  • Relatives of those infected with coronavirus
  • Health Professionals
  • All those who care for the sick of this epidemic and pray for them

3. People not infected by coronavirus.

The faithful can choose one of the following options according to their limitations:

  • Conduct Eucharistic Adoration.
  • Read the Holy Scriptures for at least half an hour.
  • Recite the Rosary.
  • Pray the Way of the Cross
  • Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
