Readings for Sunday.

Daily readings for gospel - First Reading for daily Gospel: Catholic Reading from the Book of Genesis 2:18-24: "The two of them become one flesh."

The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man. So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: "This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called woman, for out of her man this one has been taken." That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh

Daily Psalm for Sunday.

Responsorial Psalm is taken from the Book of Psalm 127(128),1–2, 3, 4–5, 6: "May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives." (R).

  • Blessed are you who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways! For you, shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed shall you be, and favored.
  • Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around your table.
  • Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
  • May you see your children’s children. Peace be upon Israel!

Second Reading.

The second reading, for the Daily Gospel of Sunday, is taken from Hebrews 2: 9-11: "He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin.".

Brothers and sisters: He "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering. He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin. Therefore, he is not ashamed to call them "brothers."

Daily Gospel Acclamation.

"Alleluia, alleluia. If we love one another, God remains in us and his love is brought to perfection in us. Alleluia, alleluia" (Daily readings for today extracted of 1 John 4:12)

Daily Gospel - Mark 10: 2-16.

Catholic Daily readings for Sunday, Gospel for October 3 (Therefore what God has joined, let no human being separate.): At that time, The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, "Is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife?" They were testing him. He said to them in reply, "What did Moses command you?" They replied, "Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her." But Jesus told them, "Because of the hardness of your hearts, he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate." In the house, the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hands on them.

Catholic Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.

"We must be like children. The Guardian Angel will guide us". Pope Francis.

In the daily Readings, offers us Jesus´ words on marriage. The passage opens with the provocation of the Pharisees, who ask Jesus if it is "lawful for a man to divorce his wife", as the Law of Moses provides (cf. vv. 2-4). Jesus firstly, with the wisdom and authority that come to him from the Father, puts the Mosaic prescription into perspective, saying: "For your hardness of heart he", that is, the ancient legislator, "wrote you this commandment" (v. 5). Thus, it is a concession that is needed to mend the flaws created by our selfishness, but it does not correspond to the Creator’s original intention.

And here, Jesus again takes up the Book of Genesis: "from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female’. ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one’" (vv. 6-8). And he concludes: "What; therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder" (v. 9). In the Creator’s original plan, it is not that a man marries a woman and, if things do not go well, he repudiates her. No. Rather, the man and the woman are called to recognize each other, to complete each other, to help each other in marriage.

This teaching of Jesus is very clear and defends the dignity of marriage as a union of love which implies fidelity. What allows the spouses to remain united in marriage is a love of mutual giving supported by Christ´s grace. However, if in the spouses, individual interests, one´s own satisfaction prevails, then their union cannot endure.

And the Gospel passage itself reminds us, with great realism, that man and woman, called to experience a relationship of love, may regretfully behave in a way that places it in crisis. Jesus does not admit all that can lead to the failure of the relationship. He does so to confirm God´s plan, in which the power and beauty of the human relationship emerge. The Church, on the one hand, does not tire of confirming the beauty of the family as it was consigned to us by Scripture and by Tradition; at the same time, she strives to make her maternal closeness tangibly felt by those who experience relationships that are broken or that continue in a difficult and trying way.

God´s way of acting with his unfaithful people,  that is, with us, teaches us that wounded love can be healed by God through mercy and forgiveness. For this reason, in these situations, the Church is not asked to express immediately and only condemnation. On the contrary, before so many painful marital failures, she feels called to show love, charity and mercy, to lead wounded and lost hearts back to God.

Let us invoke the Virgin Mary, that she help married couples to always live and renew their union, beginning with God´s original Gift. (Daily Readings reflection, Angelus, 2018, October 7).

Daily Prayer for the Gospel.

Lord, guide us with your Wisdom and help us to dispel the fears of our hearts so that we may face the adversities of life with faith and confidence. Nothing can separate us from your love if we remain at your side. We want to give you to all couples who are going through great difficulties and opt for separation as a solution to their problems. You make everything new and restore every broken relationship, revive withered hearts and transform pain into blessing. We trust in You. Amen.
