Reading for saturday. Daily gospel
First Reading for daily Gospel: Reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah 9:1-7
The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light; on those who live in a land of deep shadow a light has shone. You have made their gladness greater, you have made their joy increase; they rejoice in your presence as men rejoice at harvest time, as men are happy when they are dividing the spoils. For the yoke that was weighing on him, the bar across his shoulders, the rod of his oppressor, these you break as on the day of Midian. For all the footgear of battle, every cloak rolled in blood, is burnt, and consumed by fire. For there is a child born for us, a son given to us and dominion is laid on his shoulders; and this is the name they give him: Wonder-Counsellor, Mighty-God, Eternal-Father, Prince-of-Peace. Wide is his dominion in a peace that has no end, for the throne of David and for his royal power, which he establishes and makes secure in justice and integrity. From this time onwards and for ever, the jealous love of the Lord of Hosts will do this.
Daily Psalm for saturday.
Psalm 112(113):1-8.
"May the name of the Lord be blessed for evermore!" (R).
Praise, O servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! May the name of the Lord be blessed both now and for evermore! May the name of the Lord be blessed for evermore! (R).
From the rising of the sun to its setting praised be the name of the Lord! High above all nations is the Lord, above the heavens his glory. (R).
Who is like the Lord, our God, who has risen on high to his throne yet stoops from the heights to look down, to look down upon heaven and earth? (R).
From the dust he lifts up the lowly, from the dungheap he raises the poor to set him in the company of princes, yes, with the princes of his people. (R).
Daily Gospel Acclamation.
"Alleluia, alleluia! Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee! Blessed art thou among women. Alleluia!" (Cfr. Lk 1:28)
Daily Gospel for august 22. Luke 1:26-38.
Daily Gospel reading for saturday, august 22 (Mary is Queen of the universe and mother of hope): "At that time, The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin´s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, "Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you." She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, "Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God´s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end." Mary said to the angel, "But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?" "The Holy Spirit will come upon you" the angel answered "and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God." "I am the handmaid of the Lord," said Mary "let what you have said be done to me." And the angel left her.".
Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.
"Mary also supports us in times of darkness".
In the reading of the daily Gospel, we see how Mary becomes a disciple and mother of her Son at the moment she welcomes the words of the Angel and says: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word".
This "be it done unto me" is not only acceptance, but also openness to the future: it is hope. This "be it done unto me" is hope.
Mary is the Mother of hope.
In this daily Gospel, we notice how Mary did not know how she could be a mother, but she entrusted herself totally to the mystery that was to be fulfilled, and she has become the woman of hope and expectation.
Mary is aware of how the mission and identity of that Son, who became Master and Messiah, surpasses her motherhood and at the same time can generate fear, as well as the words of Simeon and his prophecy of sorrow. And yet, in the face of all these difficulties and surprises in God´s plan, the Virgin´s hope never falters.
This tells us that hope is nourished by listening, by contemplation, by patience, so that the Lord´s times may mature. Even when Mary becomes the sorrowful one at the foot of the cross, her hope does not give way, but sustains her in the vigilant waiting for a mystery, greater than the pain that is about to be fulfilled.
Everything seems to be really over; any hope could be said to be extinguished. She too, at that moment, could have said, if she had not remembered the promises of the Annunciation: "This is not true! I have been deceived! And she did not. Through reading of the daily Gospel, we see that Mary believed. Her faith made her wait with hope for God´s future. A hope that today man cannot have.
Many times I think: "Do we know how to wait for God´s tomorrow, or do we want today, today, today? The future of God is for her the dawn of that day, the first of the week. It will do us good to think about contemplation, about the embrace of the son with the mother.
(...) Mary is thus the solid witness of the hope present in every moment of the history of salvation. She, the mother of hope, sustains us in moments of darkness, of difficulty, of discouragement, of apparent defeat, in real human defeats.
May Mary, the mother of our hope, help us to make our life a pleasing offering to the Heavenly Father, a joyful gift for our brothers and sisters, an attitude that always looks to the future. (Daily Gospel reflection. Message to the Benedictine Nuns of the Camaldolese Aventine in Rome, November 22, 2013)
Daily Gospel Prayer for august 22.
Lord, blessed are you for having left me your Holy Mother, who is a mother who accompanies me. You chose her to be a pure, obedient and humble maiden. You preserved her from all stain. Mary, opened the doors of her heart to your angel messenger and accepted your project of love over humanity to give us an example of fidelity. Just as Mary, Queen of the universe and mother of humility, I want to open myself to your will and that my heart also becomes the cradle of your love. May I keep your teachings in my heart and turn them into fire that drives me. In your hands, and in Mary´s hands, I entrust everything to you. Thank you for the peace you give me to live according to your precepts. Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)
