Daily Gospel for April 14. Meditated by Pope Francis. John 20:11-18. Readings of the day. Holy Gospel on Easter Tuesday

Reading of the day April 14. Easter Tuesday.

Reading of the Acts of the Apostles 2,36-41. On the day of Pentecost, Peter said to the Jewish people, "Let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?" Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit. For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call." He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day

Daily Psalm. Psalm 16(15),1-2a.5.7-8.9-10.11.

(R). "The Lord fills the earth with his love".

Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full. (R).

See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, To deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. (R).

Our soul waits for the LORD, who is our help and our shield, May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us who have put our hope in you. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation. Gospel of the day April 14 April 14. Easter Tuesday.

"Alleluia, alleluia! This day was made by the Lord: we rejoice and are glad. Alleluia!" (Cfr. 1 Psalm 117,24)

Daily Gospel. Gospel of the day April 14. John 20:11-18.

Reading for the Gospel of the day - (Easter Tuesday - The mission to Mary Magdalene) Mary Magdalene stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don´t know where they laid him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, "I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God." Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and what he told her.

Daily Gospel Commentaries by Pope Francis.

In the Gospel of the day, we realize that it is not easy to be open to Jesus. It is not taken for granted to accept the life of the Risen One and his presence among us.

The Gospel makes us see different reactions: that of the apostle Thomas, that of Mary Magdalene and that of the two disciples of Emmaus: it does us good to compare ourselves with them:

Today, these questions are also addressed to us:

  • Thomas puts a condition on faith, he asks to touch the evidence, the wounds.
  • Mary Magdalene cries, she sees him but does not recognize him, she realizes that it is Jesus only when he calls her by name.
  • The disciples of Emmaus, depressed and with feelings of defeat, arrive at the encounter with Jesus by allowing themselves to be accompanied by this mysterious wayfarer.

Each one by different paths. They were searching among the dead for the one who is alive, and it was the Lord himself who corrected the course.

And I, what do I do? What course do I follow to find the living Christ? He will always be close to us to correct the course if we have made a mistake.

Why do you seek the living among the dead? (Luke 24,5) This question makes us overcome the temptation to look back to what has been yesterday and pushes us forward to the future.

Jesus is not in the tomb, He is risen, He is the Living One, the One who always renews His body which is the Church and makes it walk by drawing it to Himself.

"Yesterday" is the tomb of Jesus and the tomb of the Church, the tomb of truth and justice; "today" is the perennial resurrection towards which the Holy Spirit is pushing us, giving us full freedom.

Today, these questions are also addressed to us:

  • Why do you seek the living among the dead, you who close yourself up after a defeat and you who have no more strength to pray?

  • Why do you seek the living among the dead, you who feel alone, abandoned by friends and perhaps even by God?

  • Why do you look for the living among the dead, you who have lost hope and you who feel imprisoned by your sins?

  • Why do you look for the living among the dead, you who aspire to beauty, spiritual perfection, justice, peace?

We need to feel that we are repeating and reminding each other of the angel´s warning.

This warning, why do you seek the living among the dead, helps us to leave our spaces of sadness and opens us to the horizons of joy and hope?

But look, brothers and sisters, he is alive, he is with us. Let us not go to so many graves that today promise you something, beauty and then give you nothing. He is alive. Let us not seek among the dead the one who is alive. Thank you. (Homily of the Gospel of the day. Santa Marta, April 23, 2014)

Pope´s quotes.

"Jesus´ resurrection shows us that death does not have the last world; life does. Christ has been raised, so it is possible to have a positive outlook on every event of our existence, even the most difficult ones and those charged with anguish and uncertainty." (04.14.2020 - @pontifex)
