Daily Gospel for April 22. Readings of the day. John 3:16-21

Daily Gospel for April 22. Meditated by Pope Francis. John 3:16-21. Readings of the day. Holy Gospel of the 2nd Easter Wednesday

Readings of the day April 22. (2nd Wednesday of Easter)

Reading of the Acts of the Apostles 5:17-26. The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles

Daily Psalm. Psalm 34(33),2-9.

(R). "This poor man called and the Lord heard him".

I will bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips; in the Lord my soul shall make its boast. The humble shall hear and be glad. (R).

Glorify the Lord with me. Together let us praise his name. I sought the Lord and he answered me; from all my terrors he set me free. (R).

Look towards him and be radiant; let your faces not be abashed. This poor man called, the Lord heard him and rescued him from all his distress. (R).

The angel of the Lord is encamped around those who revere him, to rescue them. Taste and see that the Lord is good. He is happy who seeks refuge in him. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation. Gospel of the day April 22. (2nd Wednesday of Easter)

"Alleluia, alleluia! God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son: everyone who believes in him has eternal life. Alleluia!". (Cfr. John 3:16)

Daily Gospel. Gospel of the day April 22. John 3:16-21

Reading for the Gospel of the day - (2nd Wednesday of Easter - Whoever believes in Jesus will have eternal life) God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

Daily Gospel Commentaries by Pope Francis.

In the Gospel of Today, John tells us something beautiful: "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son" (3:16).

The Father has given the Son to save us, and this has entailed the death of Jesus, and death on the cross. Why? Why has the Cross been necessary?

Because of the seriousness of the evil that enslaved us. The Cross of Jesus expresses both: all the negative force of evil, and all the meek omnipotence of God´s mercy.

The Cross seems to decree Jesus´ failure, but in reality, it marks his victory. On Calvary, those who mocked Him said:

"If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross" (Cf. Matthew 27:40)

But the opposite was true: precisely because he was the Son of God, Jesus was there, on the cross, faithful to the end of the Father´s plan of love. And precisely for this reason God has exalted Jesus (Philippians 2:9), conferring upon him a universal kingship.

And when we look at the Cross where Jesus was nailed we contemplate the sign of love, of God´s infinite love for each of us and the root of our salvation.

From that Cross flows the mercy of the Father who embraces the whole world. Through the Cross of Christ the evil one has been defeated, death is defeated, we have been given life and hope has been restored. Uh... This is important. Through the Cross of Christ, hope has been returned to us.

The Cross of Jesus is our only true hope. This is why the Church exalts the Holy Cross, and this is why we Christians bless with the sign of the cross.

In other words, we do not exalt the crosses, but the glorious Cross of Jesus, sign of God´s immense love. It is a sign of our salvation, and a way to the Resurrection. And this is our hope (Reflection of the Gospel of the day. Angelus, September 14, 2014)

Pope´s quotes.

"In the time of trial that we are presently undergoing, we experience our frailty. We need the Lord, who sees an irrepressible beauty beyond that frailty. With Him we rediscover how precious we are, even in our vulnerability." (04.21.2020 - @pontifex)
