Reading for monday. Daily gospel
Isaiah 1:10-17.
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the command of our God, you people of Gomorrah. "What are your endless sacrifices to me? says the Lord. I am sick of holocausts of rams and the fat of calves. The blood of bulls and of goats revolts me. When you come to present yourselves before me, who asked you to trample over my courts? Bring me your worthless offerings no more, the smoke of them fills me with disgust. New Moons, sabbaths, assemblies, I cannot endure festival and solemnity. Your New Moons and your pilgrimages I hate with all my soul. They lie heavy on me, I am tired of bearing them. When you stretch out your hands I turn my eyes away. You may multiply your prayers, I shall not listen. Your hands are covered with blood, wash, make yourselves clean. "Take your wrong-doing out of my sight. Cease to do evil. Learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed, be just to the orphan, plead for the widow."
Daily Psalm for monday.
Psalm 49(50):8-9,16-17,21,23
"I will show God´s salvation to the upright." (R).
I find no fault with your sacrifices, your offerings are always before me. I do not ask more bullocks from your farms, nor goats from among your herds. (R).
But how can you recite my commandments and take my covenant on your lips, you who despise my law and throw my words to the winds. (R).
You do this, and should I keep silence? Do you think that I am like you? A sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me and I will show God´s salvation to the upright. (R).
Daily Gospel Acclamation.
"Alleluia, alleluia! Happy those who are persecuted in the cause of right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Alleluia!" (Cfr. Mt 5:10)
Daily Gospel for july 13. Matthew 10,34-11,1.
Daily Gospel reading for monday, july 13 (What it means to follow Jesus with all your heart): "At that time, Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth: it is not peace I have come to bring, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man´s enemies will be those of his own household. Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me. Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet´s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have a holy man´s reward. If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward. When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples he moved on from there to teach and preach in their towns.".
Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.
In the reading of the daily Gospel, Jesus said to his disciples: "Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:28). (Matthew 10:28) This means to follow him on the path that he himself took, without looking for shortcuts.
There is no true love without the cross, that is, without a personal price to pay. And many mothers, many fathers who sacrifice many things to their child, and carry true sacrifices, crosses, but because they love them.
And when it is carried with Jesus, the cross is not scary because it is always by our side to support us in the most difficult hour of trial, to give us strength and courage.
God first.
We reflect on Jesus´ "demanding request" to his followers to put love for him before family ties: "Whoever loves his father or mother... son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:37). (Matthew 10:37) Jesus certainly does not intend to underestimate the love of parents and children, but he knows that family ties, if put first, can deviate from the true good.
Putting family ties first sometimes results in corruption. We see this: some forms of corruption in governments occur precisely because the love for the family is greater than the love for the country, and that is why they put family members in charge. It is the same with Jesus: when the love is greater than He is, it is not good.
Losing one´s life for love.
We also reflect on another phrase of Jesus in the same chapter of today´s Gospel of Matthew: "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it" (Matthew 10:39). This is "the paradox of the Gospel". We see it these days, how many people, how many people, carry crosses to help others, sacrifice themselves to help others who are in need in this pandemic. But, always with Jesus, it can be done.
The fullness of life and joy is found in giving oneself for the Gospel and for others, through openness, acceptance and goodness.
Generosity.
Jesus also told his disciples that "Whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones... will not lose his reward" (Matthew 10:42).
(Matthew 10:42) God´s generous gratitude takes into account even the smallest gesture of love and service to our brothers and sisters. (Matthew 10:42) God´s generous gratitude takes into account even the smallest gesture of love and service to our brothers and sisters:
"Father, these are my savings; they are not many. They are for the poor, for those who are in need because of the pandemic."
A small thing, but a big thing. It is a contagious gratitude that helps each of us be grateful to those who care for our needs.
Gratitude, appreciation, is first of all good manners, but it is also characteristic of a Christian. It is a simple but genuine sign of the kingdom of God, which is the kingdom of free and grateful love. (Daily Gospel reflection, Vatican City, June 20, 2020)
Daily Gospel Prayer.
Loving Father, I want to place myself in your hands, trusting in your providence, being certain that your compassionate eyes remain open to watch over my ways and my actions. I know that you will remain there protecting me in the midst of the conflicts that come my way. I trust in the power of your love, I trust that you will not give me a heavy cross that I cannot carry. My heart is filled with that peace that embraces my soul and invites me to love you above all things, knowing that, by meeting you in love, and putting you first, I can go back to loving my loved ones in a more perfect way. Like the psalmist, full of confidence I can say: "Lord, You sustain me because of my integrity, and keep me forever in Your presence" (Psalm 41:13) Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)
The Pope´s daily quotation.
"Mary´s journey to heaven began with the "yes" pronounced in Nazareth. Each "yes" to God is a step towards heaven, towards eternal life. Because the Lord wants us all with himself, in his house! (Pope Francis, 08.15.2019)
