Isaiah 26:7-9,12,16-19
The path of the upright man is straight, you smooth the way of the upright. Following the path of your judgements, we hoped in you, O Lord, your name, your memory are all my soul desires. At night my soul longs for you and my spirit in me seeks for you; when your judgements appear on earth the inhabitants of the world learn the meaning of integrity. O Lord, you are giving us peace, since you treat us as our deeds deserve. Distressed, we search for you, O Lord; the misery of oppression was your punishment for us. As a woman with child near her time writhes and cries out in her pangs, so are we, O Lord, in your presence: we have conceived, we writhe as if we were giving birth; we have not given the spirit of salvation to the earth, no more inhabitants of the world are born. Your dead will come to life, their corpses will rise; awake, exult, all you who lie in the dust, for your dew is a radiant dew and the land of ghosts will give birth.
Daily Psalm for thursday.
Psalm 101(102):13-21
"The Lord looked down from heaven to the earth." (R).
You, O Lord, will endure for ever and your name from age to age. You will arise and have mercy on Zion: for this is the time to have mercy, for your servants love her very stones, are moved with pity even for her dust. (R).
The nations shall fear the name of the Lord and all the earth’s kings your glory, when the Lord shall build up Zion again and appear in all his glory. Then he will turn to the prayers of the helpless; he will not despise their prayers. (R).
Let this be written for ages to come that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord; for the Lord leaned down from his sanctuary on high. He looked down from heaven to the earth that he might hear the groans of the prisoners and free those condemned to die. (R).
Daily Gospel Acclamation.
"Alleluia, alleluia! Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest, says the Lord. Alleluia" (Cfr. Mt. 11:28)
Daily Gospel for july 16. Matthew 11:28-30.
Daily Gospel reading for thursday, july 16 (The revelation of the Gospel to the humble): "At that time, Jesus said: "Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.".
Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.
In the reading of the daily Gospel, Jesus´ words: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11:28) indicate the mysterious way of grace that is revealed to the simple and that offers relief to those who are tired and burdened.
These words express the solidarity of the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, before a suffering and afflicted humanity. How many people suffer in body and spirit! Jesus tells everyone to come to him, "come to me", and promises them relief and comfort. When Jesus says this, he has before his eyes the people he meets every day on the roads of Galilee: many simple people, poor, sick, sinners, outcasts These people have always followed him to hear his word, a word that gave hope!
[...] Jesus addresses an invitation to the sick and the oppressed, to the poor who know that they depend completely on God and that, wounded by the weight of the trial, they need to be healed. Jesus Christ, to whom he feels anguish because of his own situation of fragility, pain and weakness, does not impose laws, but offers his mercy, that is, his saving person. Jesus looks at wounded humanity. He has eyes that see, that realize, because they look deeply, they do not run indifferently, but they stop and embrace the whole man, each man in his condition of health, without discarding anyone, and he invites each one to enter into his life to experience tenderness.
Why does Jesus Christ nourish these feelings? Because he himself became weak, lived the human experience of suffering and received in turn comfort from the Father. Indeed, only those who live this experience in the first person will know how to be consoled by others. The serious forms of suffering are various: incurable and chronic illnesses, psychic pathologies, those in need of rehabilitation or palliative care, the various disabilities, the illnesses of childhood and old age. In these circumstances, sometimes a lack of humanity is perceived and, for this reason, it is necessary to personalize the way of approaching the sick person, adding to the cure the care, for an integral human recovery. During the illness, the person feels that not only his physical integrity is compromised, but also his relational, intellectual, affective and spiritual dimensions; that is why, in addition to the treatments, he expects to receive support, solicitude, attention, in short, love. On the other hand, next to the sick person there is a family that suffers, and at the same time asks for comfort and closeness.
Dear sick brothers and sisters: Because of your illness, you are in a special way among those who, "tired and burdened", attract Jesus´ gaze and heart. From this comes the light for your moments of darkness, the hope for your distress. Jesus invites you to come to him: "Come". In him you will find the strength to face the concerns and questions that arise in you, in this "night" of body and spirit. Yes, Christ has not given us recipes, but with his passion, death and resurrection he frees us from the oppression of evil.
[...] I am thinking of the many brothers and sisters throughout the world who have no access to treatment because they live in poverty. I therefore appeal to the health institutions and governments of all the countries of the world so that they do not neglect social justice, considering only the economic aspect. I hope that, by combining the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity, there will be cooperation to ensure that everyone has access to appropriate care to safeguard and restore their health. I heartily thank the volunteers who place themselves at the service of the sick, who in many cases make up for structural shortcomings and reflect, with gestures of tenderness and closeness, the image of Christ the Good Samaritan.
I entrust to the Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick, all the people who are bearing the burden of the illness, as well as their families and health workers. To all, I affectionately assure you of my closeness in prayer and heartily impart the Apostolic Blessing. (Message for the 28th World Day of the Sick, General Audience, February 11, 2020)
Daily Gospel Prayer.
My Lord, You know how tired I am, the weakness that takes over my life, and the discouragement that comes when things don´t turn out as I expected. In the face of all my afflictions, You tell me to turn to You and rest in You, who can ease my burdens, guide me wisely and give me Your healing strength. Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)
The Pope´s daily quotation.
"It takes more strength to repair than to build, to restart than to start, to reconcile than to get along. This is the strength that God gives us". (Pope Francis, 08.21.2019)
