Reading for monday. Daily gospel

Micah 6:1-4,6-8.

Listen to what the Lord is saying: Stand up and let the case begin in the hearing of the mountains and let the hills hear what you say. Listen, you mountains, to the Lord´s accusation, give ear, you foundations of the earth, for the Lord is accusing his people, pleading against Israel: My people, what have I done to you, how have I been a burden to you? Answer me. I brought you out of the land of Egypt, I rescued you from the house of slavery; I sent Moses to lead you, with Aaron and Miriam. "With what gift shall I come into the Lord´s presence and bow down before God on high? Shall I come with holocausts, with calves one year old? Will he be pleased with rams by the thousand, with libations of oil in torrents? Must I give my first-born for what I have done wrong, the fruit of my body for my own sin?" What is good has been explained to you, man; this is what the Lord asks of you: only this, to act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God.

Daily Psalm for monday.

Psalm 85(86):5-6,9-10,15-16.

"I will show God’s salvation to the upright." (R).

Summon before me my people who made covenant with me by sacrifice. The heavens proclaim his justice, for he, God, is the judge. (R).

I find no fault with your sacrifices, your offerings are always before me. I do not ask more bullocks from your farms, nor goats from among your herds. (R).

But how can you recite my commandments and take my covenant on your lips, you who despise my law and throw my words to the winds. (R).

You do this, and should I keep silence? Do you think that I am like you? a sacrifice of thanksgiving honours me and I will show God’s salvation to the upright. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation.

"Alleluia, alleluia! Harden not your hearts today, but listen to the voice of the Lord. Alleluia!" (Cfr. Psalm 94:8)

Daily Gospel for july 20. Matthew 12:38-42.

Daily Gospel reading for monday, july 20 (The only sign they will have is that of Jonah): "At that time, some of the scribes and Pharisees spoke up. "Master", they said "we should like to see a sign from you." He replied, "It is an evil and unfaithful generation that asks for a sign! The only sign it will be given is the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the sea-monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.".

Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.

"The sign of God is his love, forgiveness and mercy."

In the reading of the daily Gospel, what is the sign of Jonah? Jesus promises the sign of Jonah. But what did the prophet Jonah have in his heart, he did not want to go to Nineveh and fled to Spain. He thought that he had the clear ideas: "the doctrine is this, one must believe this. If they are sinners, let them manage; I have nothing to do with it".

This is Jonah´s syndrome. And Jesus condemns it... God says to Jonah: poor people, they don´t know right from left, they are ignorant, sinners. But Jonah continues to insist: "they want justice. I keep all the commandments; let them manage.

Here is the Jonah syndrome, which strikes those who do not have the zeal for the conversion of people, who seek a holiness of dry-cleaning, that is, all beautiful, well done, but without the zeal that leads us to preach the Lord.

The Lord before this generation, sick with the Jonah syndrome, promises the sign of Jonah. In the other version, that of Matthew, it is said: but Jonah was in the whale three nights and days. The reference is to Jesus in the tomb, to his death and to his resurrection.

And this is the sign that Jesus promises: against hypocrisy, against this attitude of perfect religiosity, against this attitude of a group of Pharisees.

The sign that Jesus promises is his forgiveness through his death and resurrection. The sign that Jesus promises is his mercy, which God has been asking for a long time: "I want mercy, not sacrifice". So the true sign of Jonah is the one that gives us the confidence of being saved by the blood of Christ.

There are many Christians who think they are saved only by what they do, by their works. Works are necessary, but they are a consequence, a response to that merciful love that saves us. Works alone, without this merciful love, are not enough. (Daily Gospel reflection, Saint Martha, October 14, 2013)

Daily Gospel Prayer.

You come to my defense when danger threatens me. Keep me away from those unhealthy environments that do not favor or enrich me and lead me to perdition. There is no one as great as you. May my heart always be in an attitude of gratitude and trust in your providence and your all-healing love. Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)

The Pope´s daily quotation.

"May God, who loves life, give us the courage to work for good without waiting for others to begin, and without waiting until it is too late. (Pope Francis, 09.2.2019)

Daily porpose.

At the end of the day, in an appropriate place, I will make a sincere act of contrition, asking, thanking and trusting in the great love and mercy of God.
