Readings for daily Gospel, September 13, 2020. Reflection on holy Gospel of Matthew 18:21-35 - Daily Readings and the daily Prayer for your life on Sunday of the 24th Week in Ordinary Time.

Daily prayer for September 13.

My Lord and my God, at this moment I want to go to your presence to ask you for a little protection. I feel that the foundation of my life is shaken and I lose heart at the first difficult situation that comes my way. I turn to your Holy Spirit to fill my heart with peace and calm my thoughts. I trust your power to heal me as I deepen my relationship with you. Help me to overcome the challenges I face. Amen.

Reading for Sunday. Daily gospel

First Reading for daily Gospel: Reading from the book of Ecclesiasticus 27:33-28:9.

Resentment and anger, these are foul things, and both are found with the sinner. He who exacts vengeance will experience the vengeance of the Lord, who keeps strict account of sin. Forgive your neighbour the hurt he does you, and when you pray, your sins will be forgiven. If a man nurses anger against another, can he then demand compassion from the Lord? Showing no pity for a man like himself, can he then plead for his own sins? Mere creature of flesh, he cherishes resentment; who will forgive him his sins? Remember the last things, and stop hating, remember dissolution and death, and live by the commandments. Remember the commandments, and do not bear your neighbour ill-will; remember the covenant of the Most High, and overlook the offense.

Daily Psalm for Sunday.

Psalm 115(116):12-13,17-18.

"The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy." (R).

My soul, give thanks to the Lord all my being, bless his holy name. My soul, give thanks to the Lord and never forget all his blessings. (R).

It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals every one of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with love and compassion. (R).

His wrath will come to an end; he will not be angry for ever. He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. (R).

For as the heavens are high above the earth so strong is his love for those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west so far does he remove our sins. (R).

Second reading for September 13.

Romans 14:7-9.

The life and death of each of us has its influence on others; if we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord, so that alive or dead we belong to the Lord. This explains why Christ both died and came to life: it was so that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

Daily Gospel Acclamation.

"Alleluia, alleluia! I give you a new commandment: love one another just as I have loved you, says the Lord. Alleluia!" (Cfr. Jn 13:14)

Daily Gospel for September 13. Matthew 18:21-35.

Daily Gospel reading for Sunday, September 13 (We must always forgive others): "At that time, Peter went up to Jesus and said, "Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? As often as seven times?" Jesus answered, "Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times. "And so the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts with his servants. When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents; but he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, to meet the debt. At this, the servant threw himself down at his master´s feet. "Give me time" he said "and I will pay the whole sum." And the servant´s master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancelled the debt. Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fellow servant who owed him one hundred denarii; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him. "Pay what you owe me" he said. His fellow servant fell at his feet and implored him, saying, "Give me time and I will pay you." But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison till he should pay the debt. His fellow servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went to their master and reported the whole affair to him. Then the master sent for him. "You wicked servant," he said "I cancelled all that debt of yours when you appealed to me. Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow servant just as I had pity on you?" And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers till he should pay all his debt. And that is how my heavenly Father will deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from your heart.".

Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.

"Forgiveness leads to reconciliation."

The reading of the daily Gospel, Peter asks the Lord, "If my brother offends me, how many times must I forgive him? Up to seven times? And the Lord answered him, "I do not say up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven".

These words are central to Jesus´ message of reconciliation and peace.

Obedient to his command, we ask our Father in heaven every day to forgive us our sins as we forgive those who offend us. If we were unwilling to do so, how could we sincerely pray for peace and reconciliation?

In the daily Gospel, Jesus asks us to believe that forgiveness is the doorway to reconciliation. By telling us to forgive our brothers without reservation, he asks us to do something totally radical, but he also gives us the grace to do it.

What from a human point of view seems impossible, unachievable, and perhaps even unacceptable, Jesus makes possible and fruitful through the infinite power of his cross.

The cross of Christ reveals the power of God that overcomes every division, heals every wound and restores the original bonds of brotherly love. Have confidence in the power of the cross of Christ. Receive His reconciling grace in your hearts and share it with others.

Through meditation on the daily Gospel, "I ask you to bear convincing witness to Christ´s reconciling message in your homes, in your communities and in all areas of national life. I hope that, in a spirit of friendship and collaboration with other Christians, with the followers of other religions, and with all men and women of good will, you will be leaven for the Kingdom of God on this earth. In this way, our prayers for peace and reconciliation will come to God from more pure hearts and, by a gift of his grace, will achieve that precious good that we all desire."

Let us pray that new opportunities for dialogue and encounter will arise, that differences will be overcome, that with constant generosity humanitarian assistance will be provided to all who are in need.

Dear brothers and sisters, God calls us to return to him and to listen to his voice, and he promises to establish on earth an even greater peace and prosperity than that known by our ancestors. (Daily Gospel reflection, Santa Marta, August 18, 2014)

Daily Prayer for Gospel.

My Lord, how great you are! Sometimes we do not understand your purposes in our lives, but we know that they are better than any plan we have planned. I want to entrust myself to your grace, to your providence, but sometimes I am overcome with fear. Put strength in my heart so that I will not be overwhelmed by an uncertain future. Let me know that in You, I can achieve everything. Let your Holy Spirit come into my life and guide me. I want to offer you my sincere prayer. May all my thoughts and actions be in alignment with your love. Soften my heart and strengthen it, so that it is directed by your truth, and not by the misleading senses of my body and mind that sometimes lead me to deserts of frustration. In the name of Christ I ask this. Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)

The Pope´s daily quotation.
