Daily Gospel for December 8. Luke 1:26-38.
Daily readings Tuesday, Gospel for December 8 (The Virgin Mary Immaculate is also the servant of the Lord): At that time, The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. He went in and said to her, "Rejoice, so highly favoured! The Lord is with you." She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean, but the angel said to her, "Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God´s favour. Listen! You are to conceive and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David; he will rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign will have no end." Mary said to the angel, "But how can this come about, since I am a virgin?" "The Holy Spirit will come upon you" the angel answered "and the power of the Most High will cover you with its shadow. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God. Know this too: your kinswoman Elizabeth has, in her old age, herself conceived a son, and she whom people called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible to God." "I am the handmaid of the Lord," said Mary "let what you have said be done to me." And the angel left her.". Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.
"Pope Francis: A pure heart like Mary´s"
From daily Reading we are before one of those wonders of the Lord: Mary. A humble and weak creature like us, chosen to be the Mother of God, Mother of her Creator
The Virgin Mary: before the announcement of the Angel, she does not hide her astonishment. It is the amazement of seeing that God, to become man, has chosen precisely her, a simple girl from Nazareth, who does not live in the palaces of power and wealth, who has not done extraordinary things, but who is open to God, she trusts him, even if she does not understand him completely. Her answer is: "Behold the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word". (Luke 1:38).
God always surprises us, breaks our schemes, puts our projects in crisis, and tells us: trust me, do not be afraid, let yourself be surprised, go out of yourself and follow me.
Based on the daily readings, let us all ask ourselves today if we are afraid of what the Lord might ask of us or of what he is asking of us. Do I let myself be surprised by God, as Mary did, or do I close myself off from my securities, material securities, intellectual securities, ideological securities, securities of my projects? Do I let God truly enter my life? How do I respond to him?
From daily Reading, we see that Mary has said her YES to God, a YES that has changed her humble existence in Nazareth, but it was not the only one, rather it was the first of many other YES pronounced in her heart in both joyful and painful moments; all these YES culminated in the one pronounced under the Cross.
Today, here are many mothers; think how far Mary´s fidelity to God has reached: even to see her only Son on the Cross. The faithful woman, standing, destroyed within, but faithful and strong. (Daily Readings reflection, Saint Martha, October 13, 2013).
Daily Prayer Tuesday, for Gospel.
Lord, I pray that the Holy Spirit will find refuge in my heart, filling it with your power to continue my struggles without fear. Like Mary, I too am your slave, your servant, attentive to your Word and to putting it into practice. May the fire of your love be reborn in my heart. Make me live the experience of Mary, that immense thirst to have you. Amen. (Healing with the serenity prayer for daily readings and Holy Gospel)
The Pope´s daily quotation.
Even a smile shared with the poor is a source of love and joy. May the outstretched hand always be enriched by the smile of one who does not weigh down his presence or the help he offers, but rejoices only in living according to the style of Christ´s disciples". Pope Francis.
Purpose for daily Gospel.
I will meditate in silence on Mary´s words: "Let it be done to me according to your word", and see what God says to me through them according to the things that happen to me.
