Readings for Thursday.

First Reading for daily Gospel: Reading from the book of Apocalypse 5,1-10: "The blood of the Lamb bought men for God".

"I saw that in the right hand of the One sitting on the throne there was a scroll that was written on back and front and was sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a powerful angel who called with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?" But there was no one, in heaven or on the earth or under the earth, who was able to open the scroll and read it. I wept bitterly because nobody could be found to open the scroll and read it, but one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed, and so he will open the scroll and its seven seals." Then I saw, in the middle of the throne with its four living creatures and the circle of the elders, a Lamb standing that seemed to have been sacrificed; it had seven horns, and it had seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits that God has sent out over the whole world. The Lamb came forward to take the scroll from the right hand of the One sitting on the throne, and when he took it, the four living creatures prostrated themselves before him and with them the twenty-four elders; each one of them was holding a harp and had a golden bowl full of incense which are the prayers of the saints. They sang a new hymn: You are worthy to take the scroll and to break its seals because you were sacrificed, and with your blood, you bought people for God of every race, language, people and nation and made them a line of kings and priests for God, to rule the world."

Daily Psalm for Thursday.

Psalm 149:1-6,9: "You made us a line of kings and priests to serve our God." (R).

  • Sing a new song to the Lord, his praise in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice in its Maker, let Zion’s sons exult in their king. (R).
  • Let them praise his name with dancing and make music with timbrel and harp. For the Lord takes delight in his people. He crowns the poor with salvation. (R).
  • Let the faithful rejoice in their glory, shout for joy and take their rest. Let the praise of God be on their lips: this honour is for all his faithful. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation.

"Alleluia, alleluia! Let your face shine on your servant, and teach me your decrees. Alleluia!" (Daily readings for today extracted of Psalm 188,135.)

Daily Gospel for November 19. Luke 19,41-44.

Daily readings for Thursday, Gospel for November 19 (Jesus weeps and laments over Jerusalem): "At that time, as Jesus drew near Jerusalem and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it and said, "If you in your turn had only understood on this day the message of peace! But, alas, it is hidden from your eyes! Yes, a time is coming when your enemies will raise fortifications all round you, when they will encircle you and hem you in on every side; they will dash you and the children inside your walls to the ground; they will leave not one stone standing on another within you, and all because you did not recognize your opportunity when God offered it!". (The daily readings and the Holy Gospel, on this page, are from the Jerusalem Bible)

Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.

"God feels a sadness of death when He is rejected"

In the daily Readings, We observe that Jesus weeps over Jerusalem because he has not recognized the One who brings peace. The Lord weeps for the closed heart of the chosen city, the chosen people. Because he did not have time to open the door to him. She was too busy and too satisfied with herself.

Jesus continues to knock at the doors, as he has knocked at the door of the heart of Jerusalem: at the doors of his brothers, of his sisters; at our doors, at the doors of our hearts, at the doors of his Church.

Jerusalem was happy, calm with her life and had no need of the Lord: she had not realized her need for salvation. And for this reason, she closed her heart to the Lord. Jesus´ weeping for Jerusalem is the weeping for his Church, today, for us.

And why had Jerusalem not received the Lord? Because she was at peace with what she had, she didn´t want any trouble. But also, the Lord says in the Gospel: "If only you had understood this day what brings you peace. You have not recognized the time in which you have been visited".

I was afraid of being visited by the Lord; I was afraid of the gratuitousness of the Lord´s visit. I was sure of the things she could manage. We are secure in the things we can administer. But we cannot manage the Lord´s visit, his surprises.

And this is what Jerusalem was afraid of: being saved by the way of the Lord´s surprises. She was afraid of the Lord, of her Bridegroom, of her Beloved. And so, Jesus weeps. When the Lord visits his people, he brings us joy, he brings us conversion.

And we are all afraid not of the joy, no, but of the joy that the Lord brings because we cannot control it. We are afraid of conversion because to convert means to let the Lord lead us.

(...) I ask myself: today we Christians, who know the faith, the catechism, who go to Mass every Sunday, we Christians, we pastor, are we happy with ourselves? Because we have everything in order, and we do not need new visits from the Lord?

And the Lord continues to knock on the door, of each one of us and of his Church, of the pastors of the Church. Eh yes, the door of our heart, of the Church, of the pastors does not open: the Lord weeps, also today". (Daily Readings reflection, St. Martha, November 21, 2014.).

Daily Prayer for Gospel.

Lord, help me to know you better, to love you with all my being. When I stop doing this, You cry for me. When I choose other ways than yours, you feel a deep sadness. I want to firmly board the train of faith and hope. I am sorry for every tear that my guilt has caused you. Help me to correct myself. Help me to rediscover you and meet you in love. Amen. (Healing with the serenity prayer for daily readings and Holy Gospel)

The Pope´s daily quotation.

"Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). Everything that happens to her ends up in her heart, to be passed through the sieve of prayer and transfigured by it". Pope Francis.

Purpose for daily Gospel.

When I see myself weak in the face of trial, I will call upon the mighty Name of Jesus, which is stronger than the evil that surrounds me, saying, "Jesus, be thou my strength at all times. Amen".
