Make me an instrument of yours to walk confidently knowing that you care for me as your most precious treasure. Amen.

Readings for Monday.

First Reading for daily Gospel: Reading from the book of Apocalypse 14,1-5: "Those who follow the Lamb will see the first fruits of Heaven".

In my vision I, John, saw Mount Zion, and standing on it a Lamb who had with him a hundred and forty-four thousand people, all with his name and his Father´s name written on their foreheads. I heard a sound coming out of the sky like the sound of the ocean or the roar of thunder; it seemed to be the sound of harpists playing their harps. There in front of the throne they were singing a new hymn in the presence of the four animals and the elders, a hymn that could only be learnt by the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the world; they follow the Lamb wherever he goes; they have been redeemed from amongst men to be the first-fruits for God and for the Lamb. They never allowed a lie to pass their lips and no fault can be found in them.

Daily Psalm for Monday.

Psalm 23(24):1-6: "Such are the men who seek your face, O Lord." (R).

  • The Lord´s is the earth and its fullness, the world and all its peoples. It is he who set it on the seas; on the waters he made it firm. (R).
  • Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord? Who shall stand in his holy place? The man with clean hands and pure heart, who desires not worthless things. (R).
  • He shall receive blessings from the Lord and reward from the God who saves him. Such are the men who seek him, seek the face of the God of Jacob. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation.

Daily Gospel for November 23. Luke 21,1-4.

Daily readings Monday, Gospel for November 23 (The Widow´s Offering, a Valuable Offering): "At that time, as Jesus looked up, he saw rich people putting their offerings into the treasury; then he happened to notice a poverty-stricken widow putting in two small coins, and he said, "I tell you truly, this poor widow has put in more than any of them; for these have all contributed money they had over, but she from the little she had has put in all she had to live on". (The daily readings and the Holy Gospel, on this page, are from the Jerusalem Bible)

Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.

"Pope Francis: Like the moon to the sun, the Church reflects God´s love"

In the daily Readings, we observe that "giving the little that one has, without attracting attention but only that of God because He is all the in whom we trust".

There are two tendencies always present in the history of the Church. The Church tempted by vanity and the poor Church, which should have no other wealth than her Spouse, like the humble woman in the temple: I like to see in this figure the Church that is in a certain sense a little widow because she is waiting for her Spouse to return. But she has her Bridegroom in the Eucharist, in the Word of God, in the poor, yes: but she waits for his return, doesn´t she? This attitude of the Church ...

We can see from daily reading that this widow was not relevant, this widow´s name did not appear in the newspapers. Nobody knew her. She had no titles... nothing. Nothing. She did not shine with her light. It is this that makes me see in this woman the figure of the Church.

The great virtue of the Church must be not to shine with its light, but to shine from the light that comes from her Spouse. That comes from her Spouse. And over the centuries, when the Church has wanted to have her light, she has been mistaken.

It is true that sometimes the Lord can ask his Church to take a little light of her own, but this is understandable. If the Church´s mission is to enlighten humanity, the light that is given must be only that which is received from Christ in an attitude of humility.

All the services that we do in the Church are to help us in this, to receive that light. And service without this light is not good: it makes the Church either rich or powerful or power-seeking or misguided, as has happened so often in history and in our lives, when we want to have another light, which is not precisely that of the Lord: a light of our own.

When the Church is faithful to hope and to her spouse, she is happy to receive light from him, to be in this sense like the widow, waiting, like the moon, for the sun to come. When the Church is humble, when the Church is poor, even when the Church confesses her miseries, for we all have them, the Church is faithful. The Church says: "But, I am dark, but the light comes to me from there" ... and this does us so much good.

Let us pray to this widow who is in Heaven, surely, let us pray to this widow to teach us to be Church like this, giving of life all that we have: nothing for us. Everything for the Lord and for our neighbor. Humble. Without boasting of having our light, always seeking the light that comes from the Lord. So be it. (Daily Readings reflection, Saint Martha, November 25, 2014.).

Daily Prayer for Gospel.

Lord, touch my heart, make me feel your grace and your love. May my words be guided by your wisdom and may my faith grow in a real way. Fill me with humility so that I may be able to give my space to those who need it. Empty me of insecurity and fear, of any blockage in my soul that prevents me from being happy. I am yours, I open my heart, I listen to your voice and I let your healing in. Amen. (Healing with the serenity prayer for daily readings and Holy Gospel)
