Saint Peter of Verona was a 13th century Italian Dominican priest and a great preacher. He became famous for moving people to conversion through his preaching and miracles, and was eventually killed because he proclaimed the truth so effectively. He was canonized 11 months after his death, becoming the fastest canonization in the history of the Church.
Feast day: April 6th.
Roman Martyrology: In Milan, the passion of Saint Peter of Verona, priest of the Order of Preachers and martyr, who, born of parents who followed Manichaeism, embraced the Catholic faith as a child and, while still a teenager, received the habit of St. Dominic himself; by any means he was involved in the fight against heresy, until he was killed by his enemies on the way to Milan, proclaiming to his last breath the symbol of faith.

Saint Peter was born in Verona in 1205. His family was Albigensian, but he had the opportunity to be formed in a Catholic school. He studied at the University of Bologna and then applied to enter the Order of St. Dominic, whom he met.
Saint Peter of Verona He gave himself to the charism of the order: the mystical life and preaching. He practised very humble activities such as caring for the sick or cleaning the convent.
When he was engaged in spreading the Gospel in Lombardy, a slander brought about his being confined to the convent for a long time.
According to tradition, one day Saint Peter of Verona was kneeling in front of a crucifix complaining about his situation, then he heard:
"Peter, what have I done to deserve passion and death?"
Hearing this, St. Peter of Verona was reassured and soon after his innocence was proven.
St. Peter of Verona: the great preacher
Saint Peter of Verona went from town to town pointing out the errors of the heterodox movements and showing the richness of the Catholic religion, which he had assimilated very well, so that he always gave the example.
In this way he was winning back souls wherever he went. He had great eloquence and the gift of working miracles, and people were always ready to listen to him.
Saint Peter of Verona often began his sermons with these famous words: "Forty days are granted to Nineveh to convert, or it will be destroyed," he would enter preaching and say:
"O city of Milan! O Parma! You are another Nineveh, convert to God, do penance for your sins, because if you do not do it, you will soon be ruined and the scourge of God will come upon you".
With this zeal, he moved the people to penance, through the healthy fear of offending the Creator.
Towards the year 1234, Pope Gregory IX appointed Saint Peter of Verona as Inquisitor General for the Milanese territories, because of his profound theological knowledge and his zeal for souls. He then unmasked erroneous ideas and reconciled many Albigensians.
In 1244-45 the bishop of Florence, named Ardingo, invited the Dominican to his diocese. Here he met the seven founders of the Servites, to whom he gave advice and revealed a secret: Our Lady had pointed out in a dream to Peter that the colours of the habit of the servants of Mary should be black to symbolize the pains he suffered and that the rule they should follow was that of St. Augustine.
Saint Peter of Veronain his turn founded the Confraternity for the praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of whom he was a great devotee, and the association of faith, to defend the orthodoxy.
The martyrdom of St. Peter of Verona.
In 1252 he announced in a sermon that a plot was being formed against him, but he added
"Leave them alone after my death I will be even more powerful."
A short time later he was intercepted in a forest, Saint Peter of Verona was hit on the head with an axe and with the blood that ran off he managed to write on the ground "I believe in one God", that is, he made one last act of faith.
The murderer named Carino was converted and entered the Order of Preachers, where he died in the odour of sanctity.
The process of canonization of Saint Peter of Verona was one of the quickest, already a year after his death, in 1253 his public worship was authorized. Innocent IV canonized him and he became the protomartyr of the Dominican Order
Saint Peter of Verona is asked for his intercession to protect children and young people from falling into vices and bad influences.
In turn, Saint Peter of Verona is also invoked to prevent robberies, attacks and to have peace of mind in the home. This patronage arose, since he was martyred, during his journey to Milan.

We beseech you, O God Almighty, that with due devotion, we may follow the faith of the blessed St. Peter of Verona, your martyr and friend, who, in spreading that same faith, was found worthy of winning the palm of martyrdom.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
