Daily Gospel - Readings for July 4, 2020.
Reading for saturday.
Amos 9:11-15.
"Thus says the Lord: "In that day I will raise up David´s fallen tent, I will cover its breaches, I will raise up its ruins as in former times. That they may possess the first fruits of Edom, and of all the nations, where my name was called. Oracle of the Lord. Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when he who plows will follow the reaper closely, and he who treads on the grapes will follow the sower, and the mountains will flow with wine, and the hills will flow with it. I will bring back the captives of Israel, and they shall build cities that are desolate and inhabit them, and shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and cultivate gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant them in their field, and they shall not be plucked out of the field which I have given them, says the Lord your God."
Daily Psalm for saturday.
Psalm 84(85):9,11-14
"The Lord speaks peace to his people" (R).
I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people and his friends and those who turn to him in their hearts. (R).
Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. (R).
The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. (R).
Daily Gospel Acclamation.
"Alleluia, alleluia! The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice, says the Lord, I know them and they follow me. Alleluia!" (Cfr. John 10:27)
Daily Gospel for july 4. Matthew 9:14-17
#dailygospel Daily Gospel reading for saturday, July 4 (To new wine, new wineskins): "At that time John´s disciples came to Jesus and asked him, ´Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but not your disciples? Jesus answered: "Surely the guests of the bridegroom will not think of mourning while the bridegroom is with them". But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of undyed cloth on an old cloak, because the patch pulls on the cloak and the tearing gets worse. Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins; if they do, the skins burst, the wine runs out and the skins are lost. No; they put new wine into new skins and both are preserved".
Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.
We can learn about the Christian way by first knowing our attitudes that do not belong to the Christian way. The "accusatory style", the "worldly style" and the "selfish style".
The accusatory style belongs to those who always try to live by accusing others, disqualifying them, acting as absent promoters of justice. But they do not realize that it is the devil´s style: in the Bible, the devil is called the "great accuser," who is always accusing others.
The same thing happened in Jesus´ time, who in some cases reproached the accusers: "Instead of looking at the mote in others´ eyes, look at the beam in your own"; or again: "Those who have not sinned can throw the first stone". To live accusing others and looking for defects is not Christian, it is not a new wine barrel.
Worldliness is an attitude of Catholics who can recite the Creed, but live on vanity, pride and attachment to money, believing themselves to be self-sufficient.
In the daily Gospel reading for today, we see that the Lord has also offered you the new wine, but you did not change the wineskin, you did not change yourself. This worldliness is what ruins so many who are good but enter into this spirit of vanity, of pride, of being seen... The humility that is part of the Christian style, like that of Our Lady and St. Joseph, is missing.
The spirit of selfishness is the spirit of indifference that is common in our communities. One thinks he is a good Catholic, but he does not care about the problems of others - wars, diseases and the suffering of our neighbors. This is the hypocrisy that Jesus reproached the doctors of the law for. So what is the Christian style?
The Christian style is that of the Beatitudes: meekness, humility, patience in suffering, love of justice, ability to endure persecution, not judging others... If a Catholic wants to learn the Christian way, so as not to fall into the accusatory style, the worldly style and the selfish style, he must read the Beatitudes. They are the wineskins, the path we must take. To be a good Christian one must know how to recite not only the Creed with the heart, but also the Our Father with the heart. (Daily Gospel reflection. Saint Martha, january 21, 2019)
The Pope´s daily quotation.
"How many times, while praying, do we limit ourselves to asking for graces and listing petitions, forgetting that the first thing is to praise the name of God, to adore him, and then to recognize in the person of the brother his living reflection. (Pope Francis, 01.26.19)
