Discover the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Counsel, and Fortitude: Learn how these divine skills empower you to serve God and the Holy Church daily. 🙌

Are you navigating life’s complexities and searching for a deeper sense of purpose that transcends your own limitations? The 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit are not just abstract theological concepts, but vibrant, supernatural "divine skills" specifically granted to every follower of Christ to empower them for the mission of the Holy Church. In an increasingly noisy world, these gifts act as a spiritual compass, transforming our fragile human efforts into monumental acts of grace that benefit the entire body of Christ. Understanding how these gifts operate is the key to unlocking the power of God in your daily life, allowing you to move beyond mere survival into a life of heroic virtue. Whether you seek the clarity of Wisdom or the unshakeable strength of Fortitude, the Holy Spirit stands ready to ignite your soul, turning your personal journey into a radiant masterpiece of divine light and service.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit consist of seven unique abilities and skills given by the Holy Spirit to the faithful followers of Christ to serve God for the common benefit of His people, the Holy Church. These gifts of the Spirit are simply God's power enabling faithful Christians to accomplish what He has called us to do.

"His divine power has bestowed on us everything that makes for life and devotion, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and power" (2 Peter 1:3).

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are part of "everything we need" to fulfill His plans for our lives.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us:

"The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. They belong in their fullness to Christ, Son of David. They complete and perfect the virtues of those who receive them. They make the faithful docile in readily obeying divine inspirations" (CCC 1831).

These gifts have their origin in Isaiah 11:1-3:

"But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD, and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide." (Isaiah 11:1-3).

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are offered to every Christian through the action of the Spirit that begins at Baptism, is strengthened in Confirmation, and is especially renewed on the feast of Pentecost.

The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Below is a list of the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit with a simple explanation of what each one does.

1. Gift of Wisdom

This is the first gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the ability to perceive creation as God's work acting in our lives and in the world. It enables us to exercise good judgment. This is particularly important for finding God in all things, especially in everything that happens to us and in everyone we encounter. It is based on common sense and comes from life experience and learning.

Wisdom distinguishes between good and evil, seeks and defends truth and justice, and balances personal well-being with the common good.

As Saint Thomas Aquinas taught, wisdom is the highest of the gifts because it allows the soul to judge all things by divine standards. It is not merely intellectual, but an experiential "tasting" of God's presence. In the words of the Apostle: "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits" (James 3:17).

2. Gift of Understanding

The Gift of Understanding is the Holy Spirit's gift of intelligence and enlightenment. It is the ability to perceive, comprehend, and interpret information; to have insight and discern meaning. It is the capacity to analyze and reason, solve problems, and decide to follow Christ in our daily lives.

3. Gift of Counsel

This is one of the most requested gifts. It is the ability to teach and inform, guide and direct, warn and admonish, recommend and encourage. The Holy Spirit offers this special gift to parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, counselors, supervisors, elders, and the like. Counseling is not only the ability to give good advice but also to receive it.

It is also the ability to discern between good and evil and thus choose good over evil and act accordingly.

4. Gift of Fortitude

The ability to overcome fear and be willing to walk with Christ, thereby actively resisting the temptation to yield to pressure and follow the masses when they do evil. The early Christian community is described as being full of courage to live according to Christ's teachings and proclaim Him even if threatened with death.

The Catechism explains that this gift enables the person to "conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions" (CCC 1808). This supernatural courage is often what sustains those facing extreme adversity. As Saint John Paul II stated, fortitude is necessary to remain faithful to the Gospel in an increasingly secularized world, giving us a "heroic" persistence in virtue.

5. Gift of Knowledge

The ability to know God and love Him. More deeply, it is the ability to study and learn; to acquire, retain, and master a wide spectrum of information and about the faith; and to make good use of it for purposes that edify the Mystical Body of Christ.

6. Gift of Piety

The ability to live humbly and walk with God in total respect for all of God's children. Piety draws us to pray and worship. It is the only gift not part of Isaiah's original list. Piety is personal holiness, the ability to live a decent life, free of sin, dedicated to God, and obedient to God's will.

7. Gift of Fear of God

It is the ability to be aware that we are always in God's presence. Fear of the Lord is awe, reverence, and respect for God. It despises human self-sufficiency and recognizes that everything comes from God. Consequently, those who "Fear the Lord" gladly offer their praise, adoration, and worship to God alone. According to the Book of Proverbs: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7). He who fears the Lord knows his place as a beloved child of a loving Father.

Let us always pray to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit that will make us grow in holiness and strength.

Prayer for the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Lord Jesus Christ, who before ascending into heaven promised to send the Holy Spirit to finish your work in the souls of your apostles and disciples, deign to grant me the same Holy Spirit so that He may perfect in my soul the work of your grace and your love.

Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom so that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only to the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit of Counsel so that I may choose the surest way to please God and gain Heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude so that I may carry my cross with You, and so that I may bravely overcome all obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge so that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety so that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, the Spirit of Holy Fear of God so that it may fill me with a loving reverence toward God, and I may fear in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of your true disciples and animate me in all things with your Spirit. Amen.

Prayers to the Holy Spirit

Here are two prayers you can use to ask for the gifts of the Holy Spirit for your life.

1. Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit #1

Holy Spirit of light and love, you are the substantial love of the Father and the Son; hear my prayer. Generous giver of the most precious gifts, grant me a strong and living faith that makes me accept all revealed truths and model my conduct according to them. Give me a very confident hope in all divine promises that impels me to abandon myself without reservation to you and your guidance. Infuse in me a love of perfect goodwill, and act according to the smallest desires of God. Make me love not only my friends but also my enemies, in imitation of Jesus Christ, who through you offered Himself on the cross for all men. Holy Spirit, animate me, inspire me and guide me, and help me to always be a true follower of yours. Amen.

2. Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit #2

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.

❓ FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit

The 7 gifts are supernatural permanent dispositions that make us docile to divine inspirations, while the fruits (charity, joy, peace, etc.) are the observable results or "perfections" that the Spirit forms in us as we use those gifts. As the Catechism states, the gifts "complete and perfect the virtues" (CCC 1831).

While the spiritual character of Confirmation is indelible, the active operation of the gifts can be hindered by mortal sin, which separates us from God's grace. However, these divine skills are restored and re-ignited through the Sacrament of Penance, allowing the soul to return to its supernatural mission of service to the Holy Church.

Biblical Fear of the Lord is not terror, but a "filial fear" rooted in love and deep reverence for God's majesty. As Scripture proclaims: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; prudent are all who live by it" (Psalm 111:10). It is a gift because it frees us from being afraid of the world.

Absolutely. The Holy Spirit grants the Gift of Counsel to help us make "prudent" decisions and provide sound guidance to others. Saint John Bosco often invoked this gift to mentor young people. It allows us to apply the light of faith to concrete situations, ensuring our professional and personal choices align with God's will.

Knowing your most active gift requires prayerful discernment and observing where you most effectively serve others. If you frequently provide clarity to others, you may have the gift of Understanding; if you show great resilience in trials, it may be Fortitude. Every gift is given "for the common benefit" of God's people.
