My Lord, thank You because in spite of my mistakes You do not reject me, but give me opportunities to improve. I am yours, I give you all my worries. I count on your blessing on this day. Pour out your mercy on me to build this day on forgiveness and love. Amen.
Reading for saturday. Daily gospel
Jeremiah 26:11-16,24.
The priests and prophets said to the princes and to all the people, "This man deserves death; he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears." Jeremiah gave this answer to the princes and all the people: "It was the LORD who sent me to prophesy against this house and city all that you have heard. Now, therefore, reform your ways and your deeds; listen to the voice of the LORD your God, so that the LORD will repent of the evil with which he threatens you. As for me, I am in your hands; do with me what you think good and right. But mark well: if you put me to death, it is innocent blood you bring on yourselves, on this city and its citizens. For in truth it was the LORD who sent me to you, to speak all these things for you to hear." Thereupon the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve death; it is in the name of the LORD, our God, that he speaks to us." But Ahikam, son of Shaphan, protected Jeremiah, so that he was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
Daily Psalm for saturday.
Psalm 68(69):15-16,30-31,33-34
"In your great love, answer me, O God." (R).
Rescue me from sinking in the mud; save me from my foes. Save me from the waters of the deep lest the waves overwhelm me. Do not let the deep engulf me nor death close its mouth on me. (R).
As for me in my poverty and pain let your help, O God, lift me up. I will praise Gods name with a song; I will glorify him with thanksgiving. (R).
The poor when they see it will be glad and God-seeking hearts will revive; for the Lord listens to the needy and does not spurn his servants in their chains. (R).

Daily Gospel for august 1. Matthew 14:1-12.
Daily Gospel reading for saturday, august 1 (The death of John the Baptist): "At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus and said to his servants, "This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him." Now Herod had arrested John, bound (him), and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, for John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Although he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. But at a birthday celebration for Herod, the daughter of Herodias performed a dance before the guests and delighted Herod so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests who were present, he ordered that it be given, and he had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus".
Daily Gospel reflection by Pope Francis.
"Don´t give in to vanity by seeking a power of authority"
In the reading of the daily Gospel, we observe that John was the man God had sent to prepare the way for his Son. And John ends his life badly, in Herod´s court that was in a banquet.
When the court exists, everything is possible: corruption, vices, crimes. The courts favor these things. What did John do? First of all he announced the Lord.
St. John the Baptist announced that the Savior was near, the Lord, that the Kingdom of God was near and he did it with strength. And he baptized. He exhorted everyone to be converted. He was a strong man. And he announced Jesus Christ.
The first great thing St. John did was to announce Jesus Christ. Another thing he did was that he did not take over his moral authority. He was given the possibility of saying: "I am the Messiah", because he had a lot of moral authority, all the people went to him. They asked him if he was the Messiah.
And, at that moment of temptation, of vanity, he could make a face like a stamp and say: "I don´t know..." with a false humility. Instead he was clear: "No! I am not! He who comes after me is more powerful than I am, and I´m not even worthy to take off his sandals."
John was clear, he didn´t steal the title. He didn´t take over the mission. This, then, is the second thing that has made him a real man: "Do not steal dignity".
The third thing that John did, is to imitate Christ. John, he observed, imitated Jesus, especially in the way of the lowering: John humbled himself, he lowered himself to the end, to death.
Announcer of Jesus Christ, John did not take possession of the prophecy, he is the icon of a disciple, is the man who announces Jesus Christ, who does not put himself in the place of Jesus Christ and follows the way of Jesus Christ. (Daily Gospel reflection, Saint Martha, February 7, 2014).
Daily Gospel Prayer for august 1.
Lord, I open my heart to You to help me understand Your will. Give me the courage and a solid faith to witness your love everywhere. May I at all times offer hope and proclaim your truth, no matter what rejection and persecution this may cost me. I want to reflect you in everything I do. May my intention always be purity of heart. The Pope´s daily quotation.
""Friendship is a gift of life and a gift from God. Faithful friends, who are by our side in difficult moments, are a reflection of the Lord´s affection, comfort and loving presence". (Pope Francis, 7.30.2020)
