Daily prayer for august 9.
My Lord, You are my God and my everything. Thank you for the gift of your powerful Presence every day. You are the source of divine love, that pure love that is always there to free us and give us healing when we are ready to open our hearts. I want you to fill me with that love today and give me the ability to live in freedom and believe that I can do all I can in your love. Amen.
Reading for sunday. Daily gospel
1 Kings 19:9,11-13.
When Elijah reached Horeb, the mountain of God, he went into the cave and spent the night in it. Then he was told, Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord. Then the Lord himself went by. There came a mighty wind, so strong it tore the mountains and shattered the rocks before the Lord. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind came an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there came the sound of a gentle breeze. And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
Daily Psalm for sunday.
Psalm 84(85):9-14
"Let us see, O Lord, your mercy, and give us your saving help." (R).
I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. (R).
Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. (R).
The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. (R).
Second reading for august 9.
Romans 9:1-5.
What I want to say now is no pretence; I say it in union with Christ, it is the truth, my conscience in union with the Holy Spirit assures me of it too. What I want to say is this: my sorrow is so great, my mental anguish so endless, I would willingly be condemned and be cut off from Christ if it could help my brothers of Israel, my own flesh and blood. They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the covenants; the Law and the ritual were drawn up for them, and the promises were made to them. They are descended from the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ who is above all, God for ever blessed! Amen.
Daily Gospel Acclamation.
"Alleluia, alleluia! Blessings on the King who comes, in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heavens! Alleluia!" (Cfr. Lk 19:38,2:14)
Daily Gospel for august 9. Matthew 14:22-33.
Daily Gospel reading for sunday, august 9 (We cannot be men of little faith): "At that time, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side while he would send the crowds away. After sending the crowds away he went up into the hills by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, while the boat, by now far out on the lake, was battling with a heavy sea, for there was a head-wind. In the fourth watch of the night he went towards them, walking on the lake, and when the disciples saw him walking on the lake they were terrified. "It is a ghost" they said, and cried out in fear. But at once Jesus called out to them, saying, Courage! It is I! Do not be afraid. It was Peter who answered. "Lord," he said "if it is you, tell me to come to you across the water." "Come" said Jesus. Then Peter got out of the boat and started walking towards Jesus across the water, but as soon as he felt the force of the wind, he took fright and began to sink. "Lord! Save me!" he cried. Jesus put out his hand at once and held him. "Man of little faith," he said "why did you doubt?" And as they got into the boat the wind dropped. The men in the boat bowed down before him and said, "Truly, you are the Son of God." ".
Daily Gospel reflection by Benedict XVI.
"Don´t be a person of little faith. Trust in God to sustain you".
In the reading of the daily Gospel, we see that, the Apostle Peter knew this experience well, for he lived it personally.
One night, while he was crossing the lake of Galilee with the other disciples, he was caught in a storm. His boat, at the mercy of the waves, could no longer go forward.
Jesus approached at that moment, walking on the water, and invited Peter to get out of the boat and walk towards him. Peter took a few steps among the waves, but then he began to sink and then cried out, "Lord, save me. This episode was a sign of the trial that Peter had to face at the time of Jesus´ passion.
When the Lord was arrested, he was afraid and denied him three times. He was overcome by the storm. But when his eyes met Christ´s, God´s mercy seized him again and, making him shed tears, he lifted him up from his fall.
I wanted to recall the story of Saint Peter, because I know that this place and your whole Church are particularly linked to the Prince of the Apostles. As the Bishop recalled at the beginning, according to tradition, the first proclamation of the Gospel on this earth goes back to him.
The Fisherman, "caught" by Jesus, cast his nets here too, and today we give thanks for having been the object of this "miraculous catch", which has lasted for two thousand years, a catch that, as the Apostle Peter himself writes, "has called us out of darkness into his (God´s) wonderful light" (1 Peter 2:9). (Daily Gospel reflection, Vatican City, 14 June 2008).
Daily Gospel Prayer for august 9.
O my good Jesus, never turn your face away from me. Fill me with your compassion. I want You to be forever my strength, my source of comfort, my comforter. May the boat of my life never drift because of my lack of faith and firm commitment to your love. You alone have the power to turn me away from all those evils that want to sink me. Only in You will I be able to achieve peace and security in the face of every difficulty. Save me, Lord. I trust that You restore everything and bring about calm, and for this I praise and bless You at all times. Like Mary, I want to learn to trust fully that You can do everything, and to be in awe of Your greatness and Your power. Amen. (Healing with prayer daily gospel)
The Pope´s daily quotation.
"When the Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts, He makes us understand that the Lord is near and cares for us" (Pope Francis)
Daily porpose.
In the face of any obstacle that I may encounter today, even if it is small, I will say with great faith: "Jesus, I trust in You". Trust in Divine Mercy to dispel the darkness.
