Daily Gospel for April 17. Meditated by Pope Francis. John 21:1-14. Readings of the day. Holy Gospel on Easter Friday
Reading of the day April 17. Easter Friday.
Reading of the Acts of the Apostles 4:1-12. After the crippled man had been cured, while Peter and John were still speaking to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees confronted them, disturbed that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. They laid hands on them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening. But many of those who heard the word came to believe and (the) number of men grew to (about) five thousand. On the next day, their leaders, elders, and scribes were assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly class. They brought them into their presence and questioned them, "By what power or by what name have you done this?" Then Peter, filled with the holy Spirit, answered them, "Leaders of the people and elders: If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved, then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed. He is ´the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.´ There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.
Daily Psalm. Psalm 118(117),1-2.4.22-24.25-27a.
(R). "The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone".
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, for his love has no end. Let the sons of Israel say: "His love has no end." Let those who fear the Lord say: "His love has no end." (R).
The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord; we rejoice and are glad. (R).
O Lord, grant us salvation; O Lord, grant success. Blessed in the name of the Lord is he who comes. We bless you from the house of the Lord; the Lord God is our light. (R).
Daily Gospel Acclamation. Gospel of the day April 17. Easter Friday.
"Alleluia, alleluia! This day was made by the Lord: we rejoice and are glad. Alleluia!" (Cfr. Psalm 117,24)
Daily Gospel. Gospel of the day April 17. John 21:1-14.
Reading for the Gospel of the day - (Easter Friday - They recognized the Lord for another miraculous catch) Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, Zebedee´s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We also will come with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, "Children, have you caught anything to eat?" They answered him, "No." So he said to them, "Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something." So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord." When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish. When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you just caught." So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, "Come, have breakfast." And none of the disciples dared to ask him, "Who are you?" because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead.
Daily Gospel Commentaries by Pope Francis.
In the Gospel of the day, let us always remember the story of that fishing night, when the disciples caught nothing, nothing. And that´s why they were a little angry.
That is why when they approached the shore and heard a man ask them if they had anything to eat, behold, they were angry and answered: No. Because they really had nothing.
But the man told them to cast their nets over to the other side: the disciples did so and the net was filled with fish.
It is John, the closest friend, who recognizes the Lord. Peter, the enthusiastic one, throws himself into the sea to arrive before the Lord. This was indeed a miraculous catch of fish, but when they arrived - here begins the passage of the Gospel of the day - they found that Jesus had prepared breakfast: on the grill was the fish. And they ate together. (Homily of Gospel of the day, St. Martha, 22nd May 2015)
[...] In various parts of the world there are also those who suffer, like Peter and the Apostles, because of the Gospel; there are those who give their lives to remain faithful to Christ, with a witness marked by the price of his blood.
Let us all remember this well: the Gospel of Jesus cannot be proclaimed without the concrete witness of life. Whoever hears and sees us must be able to read in our actions what he hears on our lips, and give glory to God.
I am reminded now of a piece of advice that St. Francis of Assisi gave to his brothers: preach the Gospel and, if necessary, also with your words. Preach with your life: witness.
The inconsistency of the faithful and the Pastors between what they say and what they do, between the word and the way of living, undermines the credibility of the Church.
But all this is only possible if we recognize Jesus Christ, because it is he who has called us, invited us to walk his path, has chosen us.
Announcing and bearing witness is only possible if we are close to him, just as Peter, John and the other disciples were close to the Risen Jesus, as the passage of the Gospel of the day says; there is a daily closeness to him, and they know very well who he is, they know him.
The Evangelist emphasizes that "none of the disciples dared ask him who he was, for they knew well that he was the Lord" (John 21:12).
And this is an important point for us: to live an intense relationship with Jesus, an intimacy of dialogue and life, in such a way that we recognize him as the Lord. To worship him! (Homily of Gospel of the day, April 14, 2013)
Pope´s quotes.
"Dear brother priests, we have been anointed to anoint, to give of ourselves. Let us Pray Together today asking for the humility to protect this gift of anointing, and imploring God´s mercy for the people entrusted to us and for the entire world." (04.9.2020 - @pontifex)
