Daily Gospel for April 21. Meditated by Pope Francis. John 3:7-15. Readings of the day. Holy Gospel of the 2nd Easter Monday

Readings of the day April 21. (2nd Tuesday of Easter)

Reading of the Acts of the Apostles 4:32-37. The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need. Thus Joseph, also named by the apostles Barnabas (which is translated "son of encouragement"), a Levite, a Cypriot by birth, sold a piece of property that he owned, then brought the money and put it at the feet of the apostles

Daily Psalm. 93(92):1-2,5

(R). "The Lord is King, dressed in majesty".

The LORD is king, in splendor robed; robed is the LORD and girt about with strength. (R).

And he has made the world firm, your throne stands firm from of old; from everlasting you are, O LORD. (R).

Your decrees are worthy of trust indeed: holiness befits your house, O LORD, for length of days. (R).

Daily Gospel Acclamation. Gospel of the day April 21. (2nd Easter Tuesday)

"Alleluia, alleluia! The Son of Man must be lifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. Alleluia" (Cfr. John 3:15)

Daily Gospel. Gospel of the day April 21. John 3:7b-15.

Reading for the Gospel of the day - (2nd Easter Tuesday - The Son of Man must be lifted up) Jesus said to Nicodemus: "´You must be born from above.´ The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Nicodemus answered and said to him, "How can this happen?" Jesus answered and said to him, "You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this? Amen, amen, I say to you, we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life."

Daily Gospel Commentaries by Pope Francis.

In the Gospel of Today and the Readings of the day, we see that the Lord in the desert commands Moses to make a snake and put it on a pole, and tells him that whoever is bitten by the snakes and looks at it will remain alive.

But what is the serpent? the serpent is the sign of sin, as we already see in the Book of Genesis when the serpent seduced Eve, proposing sin to her.

And God commands that sin be raised as a banner of victory. Jesus says to the Jews:

"When they have lifted up the Son of man, they will know that I am he."

Therefore, sin rose in the desert, but it is a sin that seeks salvation, because it heals there. He who is lifted up is the Son of Man, the true Savior, Jesus Christ.

Christianity is a person, an elevated person, on the Cross, a person who has fallen asleep to save us; it has become sin.

And just as in the desert sin was elevated, here God has been elevated, made man and made sin for us. And all our sins were there.

One cannot understand Christianity without understanding this profound humiliation of the Son of God, who humbled Himself by becoming a servant to death and dying on the Cross, to serve

And this is why the Apostle Paul, when he says what he boasts about (and we can also say what we boast about): "Our sins".

We have no other things to boast of, this is our misery. On behalf of God´s mercy, we glory in Christ crucified. For this reason, there is no Christianity without the Cross and there is no Cross without Jesus Christ. (Homily of the Gospel of the day. Saint Martha, April 8, 2014)

Pope´s quotes.

"The Christian response to the storms of life and history can only be mercy: compassionate love among us and toward everyone, especially toward those who suffer, who have more difficulties, and are abandoned." (04.20.2020 - @pontifex)
