Daily Gospel for December 5. Matthew 9:35-10:1,5,6-8.
Daily readings Saturday, Gospel for December 5 (Jesus´ compassion is for all who follow Him): At that time, Jesus made a tour through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the kingdom and curing all kinds of diseases and sickness. And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest." He summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them as follows: "Go rather to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils. You received without charge, give without charge.". Daily Readings reflection, by Pope Francis.
"Pope Francis: Disturb God with prayer, asking and being persevering."
The daily Reading tells us that the apostles, after the experience of the mission, are happy but tired. And Jesus full of understanding wants to give them some relief. So, he takes them to a secluded place, so they can rest a little. "Many, in between, saw them go and understood... and anticipated them.
And at this point the evangelist offers us an image of Jesus of particular intensity, photographing, so to speak, his eyes and gathering the feelings of his heart. In daily reading the evangelist says: "When Jesus disembarked, he saw a great crowd and was moved with pity for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he taught them for a long time".
Let´s take up again the three verbs of this suggestive picture: to see, to have compassion, to teach. We can call them the "Shepherd´s verbs". The first and the second are always associated with Jesus´ attitude: in fact, his gaze is not that of a sociologist or a photojournalist because he always looks with the eyes of the heart.
These two verbs: "to see" and "to have compassion" that we observe in the daily reading, configure Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Also, his compassion is not only a human feeling, but it is the shock of the Messiah in whom God´s tenderness was made flesh.
And from this compassion is born Jesus´ desire to nourish the multitude with the bread of his word. That is, to teach the word of God to the people. Jesus sees; Jesus has compassion; Jesus teaches. How beautiful this is. (Daily Readings reflection, Angelus, July 19, 2015).
