Pope Francis to visit Assisi on the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi to sign new Encyclical Fratelli tutti:Brothers and Sisters all

Pope Francis will sign in Assisi his new encyclical: Fratelli tutti.

Vatican City 05.09.20 - Pope Francis will travel to the people of Assisi on October 3 to sign an encyclical on the social, political and economic obligations that stem from the belief that all people are children of God and therefore brothers and sisters to one another.

Pope Francis will visit Assisi on the eve of the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi to sign the new Encyclical Letter Fratelli tutti (All Brothers) which deals with fraternity and social friendship.

The Vatican press office, confirming Pope Francis´ trip, said the document will be called "Fratelli Tutti" in Italian. In English, the phrase could be translated as "Brothers and Sisters All," which in Spanish means "Hermanos todos". But apparently it is inspired by what is known as the "sixth admonition" of St. Francis of Assisi to the friars, all of them men.

Conventual Franciscan Father Mauro Gambetti, custodian of the convent in Assisi, said the document "will point the world to a style for the future and give the church and people of good will the responsibility to build it together.

"Pope Francis was clearly inspired by St. Francis of Assisi who, following Jesus, recognized in fraternity, lived under the sign of mutual and loving service, the horizon of a fulfilled and happy humanity," added Father Gambetti.

Pope Francis is expected to arrive at the convent of Assisi at 3:00 p.m. to celebrate Mass at the tomb of St. Francis and after celebrating Mass then proceed to sign the new encyclical.

Because of continuing concerns and restrictions about the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the Mass and the rest of the Pope´s visit will be private, the Vatican press office said.

The encyclical is expected to echo many of the themes that Pope Francis has been discussing in his talks at the general audience on the teaching of Catholic Social Teaching in the light of the pandemic: human brotherhood, the equal dignity of all persons, the preferential option for the poor, the universal destination of goods and the obligation of solidarity. Care for the environment and the virtue of peacemaking are also expected to be part of the encyclical.

After Pope Francis signs the new encyclical on the eve of the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the text is expected to be published in several languages in the first week of October.
